Based on concerns expressed by law enforcement and emergency officials regarding major congestion expected in the metropolitan DC area during tomorrow afternoon's rush hour due to the arrangements related to the caisson procession and state funeral:
FEDERAL AGENCIES IN THE WASHINGTON, D.C. AREA WILL BE OPEN BUT UNDER AN UNSCHEDULED LEAVE POLICY ON WEDNESDAY JUNE 9, 2004.
This means that federal employees are allowed to take the day off without prior approval of their supervisors.
It is important to remember, during this time of mourning, that America is still a nation at war and it is imperative that all the functions of government continue to operate effectively for the American people. Agencies are requested to promote telework of their employees who are deemed eligible.
Other federal workers who do elect to commute into the city are encouraged to car pool or use mass transit.
We also realize there are many federal employees in the region who do not work in the downtown area and will not be impacted by the traffic concerns. This action will significantly decrease the volume of vehicles and employees entering and departing the city which will aid law enforcement and emergency officials in their preparation for this official national event.
Federal offices WILL BE OPEN as scheduled on Thursday June 10th.
