THE POSITION: The newly established National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) seeks candidates for the position of deputy director. The individual selected for this position will work closely with the NCATS director to provide leadership in catalyzing the creation, demonstration and dissemination of innovative methods and technologies that enhance the development, testing and implementation of diagnostics and therapeutics across a wide range of human diseases and conditions. As one of the National Institutes of Health’s Institutes/Centers, NCATS is not charged to focus on any one specific disease or human condition, but instead emphasizes the development of the tools and technologies to speed the process from basic discovery to better diagnostics and new treatments.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Candidates for the deputy director position must possess a record of accomplishment in innovation in the translational process, and an outstanding record of scientific accomplishment in public and/or private sector research. Applicants must possess an M.D. or Ph.D. or equivalent degree, as well as senior-level experience, leadership and accomplishment in one or more medical and/or scientific disciplines of translational science, from target validation through health care utilization research. Experience running large, complex, multidisciplinary, and dynamic programs is required; particular strength in human subjects research, regulatory science and policy is desired. Candidates must demonstrate a clear pattern of success in setting, planning, implementing and analyzing research project/program objectives and priorities; an ability to manage financial and human resources in leading research projects/programs involving extensive internal and external collaboration; the ability to communicate effectively with diverse scientific and lay audiences, and obtain the collaboration of national and international organizations and individuals who represent wide-ranging disciplines and competing priorities.
