Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I transfer files between my desktop computer and Helix Systems?
A: The simplest way is to map your /home and /data directories as network drives.  You can also use a transfer client, such as FileZilla or Fugu.  For more advanced users, there is SCP and sFTP.  See http://helix.nih.gov/Documentation/transfer.html for more information.

Q: How can I see how much diskspace I am using?
A: The command checkquota on any Helix Systems machine will report your usage as both an absolute value and a percentage of your current quota.

Q:  How can I increase my diskspace quota?
A: You can submit a request using the online form at https://helix.nih.gov/nih/storage_request.html.

Q: How much does storage cost?
A: Helix Systems charges only for /home directories, since /data directories are supported by the NIH Management Fund. The current charges can be seen at http://helix.nih.gov/Documentation/accounts.html.
