December 20th marks four months since Alhurra correspondent Bashar Fahmi went missing in Aleppo, Syria. He was reporting on the fighting there when he came under attack and was reportedly shot.
“We continue to call on Syrian authorities and others for any information on Bashar, and still there has been no evidence as to his location or his welfare,” said Richard Lobo, Director of the BBG’s International Broadcasting Bureau. “Bashar is a talented and dedicated journalist whose sole purpose of going into Syria was to report on the fighting and to tell every side of the story. We implore anyone that has information about Bashar to contact us.”
Fahmi was traveling with cameraman Cuneyt Unal and Japan Press’ Mika Yamamoto in Aleppo when a firefight broke out, killing Yamamoto and leading to the capture of Unal, who was released from Syrian prison after 90 days.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has rated Syria as one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists. In addition to Fahmi, American journalist Austin Tice has also been missing in Syria since mid-August.
There has been no official acknowledgement of Fahmi’s status.
