  • West Point community samples cadet training

    The Department of Military Instruction hosted a marksmanship training event to allow the West Point community to familiarizes themselves with the training that cadets go through during summer training. Participants braved the heat and humidity to get a feel for what the new cadets have experienced during Cadet Basic Training, but with a lot less stress placed on their performances. This is the second year DMI has hosted the event for the community.

    Military communities worldwide have already initiated antiterrorism awareness training with the recent Active Shooter exercise and the annual antiterrorism training for military and civilians who travel to give them situational awareness to help protect them from becoming victims of terrorist. A new Army-wide antiterrorism effort began Aug. 1 in conjunction with the Army initiative declaring August as Antiterrorism Month. August was selected because of the month's proximity to Sept. 11 when terrorist attacked our country in 2001.

    More than 1,300 new cadets treked up Mine Torne Hill, scaling rocks and clasping hands to reach the top, thus completing the final mission of the Hyde Challenge. It was a test of their field training and a testament to a West Point warrior who gave his life in service to his country. First Lt. Daniel Hyde, a Class of 2007 graduate, had served as a cadet regimental commander during CBT during his senior year.

    More than 1,300 new cadets will march approximately 12 miles from Camp Buckner to the front of Washington Hall at West Point, N.Y., on Aug. 9 to conclude their six-week transformation from civilians to cadets as the Class of 2014. The training has intensified over the past few weeks, first introducing them to cadet life and basic soldiering skills to more in-depth field training, like land navigation, rappelling and first responder medical training.

    West Point Cadet Brittany Fraser took command of the Cadet Basic Training Regiment for the second phase of summer training, also known as "Beast Barracks." Whereas the first cadre detail was responsible for transforming civilians into West Point cadets, the second detail completes the transformation of cadets into Soldiers, Fraser explained. Upperclass cadets are charged with leading the new cadets through basic soldiering skills like marksmanship training, rappelling and first aid.

    JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Wearing blue shirts with "Run To Remember" on the front and names of the brigade's fallen Soldiers on the back, the ladies stretch, socialize, then join hands. One of the wives says a prayer, then closes by reading names of the brigade's 41 fallen service members. It's a reminder to everyone that war comes with a price, and for the wives who lost husbands, it's reassurance that they will not be forgotten.

    The U.S. Army, Pacific historian's office conducted a virtual staff ride to Kwajalein Atoll July 23 as part of Commanding General Lt. Gen. Benjamin R. He and the senior staff were whisked back to early February 1944 for the U.S. invasion of the Japanese-held Marshall Islands and the attendant lessons learned.

    FORT SILL, Okla.--They greeted U.S. Military Academy football Coach Rich Ellerson almost as they would a general. A consistent "Hi, coach" came out from the group of West Point football players as they made their way to the Lawton High School track for an early morning workout. Running in the grass; metal and sweat; early morning hours. These all sound consistent with a normal Army day, except these cadets are still in training. They came to Fort Sill to get a taste of what a "normal" Army day is actually like. It's part of Cadet Troop Leader Training, a West Point requirement for cadets going into their junior or senior years.

    Members of the West Point community celebrated the 235th Army Birthday with two separate events June 14. United Stated Military Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Buster Hagenbeck and Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Mahoney, West Point's senior non-commissioned officer, placed wreaths on the graves of two former Army Chiefs of Staff - Gen. William C. Westmoreland, USMA Class of 1936 and former academy Superintendent, and Gen. Bernard W. Rogers, USMA Class of 1943 and former Commandant of Cadets with a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps completing the event. They then headed to the West Point Club to join the rest of the community for the cutting of the Army birthday cake, a streamer ceremony and the singing of the Army Song and Happy Birthday to the Army.

    FORT SILL, Okla.--A field artilleryman will be awarded the Medal of Honor 147 years after he fought to the death at the battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. In February, Secretary of the Army John McHugh recommended the approval of the nation's highest honor for 1st Lt. Alonzo Cushing, Battery A, 4th United States Artillery commander. During the battle of Gettysburg July 3, 1863, in the midst of what is considered by most as the turning point for Union forces in the Civil War, the young artillery officer made the ultimate sacrifice at the Angle during Picket's Charge.

    Col. Debra Lewis knows something about firsts. A member of the first class of women to graduate the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Lewis was also the first female U.S. Army Corps of Engineers district commander of Philadelphia and Seattle districts and the first woman to command a USACE district in Iraq in 2006. Lewis returned May 20 for her retirement ceremony, reflecting on a 30-year Army career and those of her time at West Point. The significance of their presence at the academy wasn't fully comprehensible to her back then, Lewis said, but then again, it permeated every facet of their lives.

According to Maguire, a second-round of amputations will occur because many of the amputees have contracted infections due to improper or unsanitary procedures performed immediately after the disaster.

Ian McCulloh, an assistant professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, has streamlined counterinsurgency methods by using the Organizational Risk Analyzer program to determine what persons in a terrorist network hold the most valuable information.

    The 402nd Army Field Support Brigade conducted a rare Iraq change of command ceremony at the Morale, Welfare and Recreation East Recreation Center here April 21 as the "Power Team" welcomed its new leader. Col. Brian R. Haebig relinquished command to Col. Lawrence W. Fuller, who is arriving from the Pentagon where he was the chief, Contingency Operations Division, deputy chief of staff, Army G-4/Logistics. Haebig's next assignment will be chief of logistics for I Corp at Fort Lewis, Wash.

    Col. Lawrence Fuller was in Qatar, April 14, touring the only Stryker battle damage repair facility in the Middle East. Fuller completed a two-day tour of Army Materiel Command warehouses at Camp As Sayliyah, a week ahead of taking command of 402nd Army Field Support Brigade at Joint Base Balad, Iraq.

The team traveled to the Hartford Gun Club in Connecticut to take on other academy teams at the Joint Service Academy Combat Weapons Competition.

  • Resolve, Recover, Restore -- Antiterrorism Exercise Tests West Point's Responsiveness

    Personnel from the Directorate of Emergency Services and Keller Army Community Hospital took immediate action, filtering civilian casualties through medical triage after a random shooting occurred April 14 at West Point. Meanwhile, military police officers executed appropriate crowd control measures and secured the area, awaiting the arrival of hostage negotiators from the Criminal Investigation Division. Nearby, the mobile DES Incident Command Post commanded the scene, keeping tabs on casualties and units, while reporting updates to the main Emergency Operations Center. The incident was staged, but the actions of nearly 100 first responders and personnel from dozens of organizations were precise and real.

    One might think that a trip section consisting of Egyptian food for breakfast, Pakistani cuisine for lunch and Indian food for dinner would take place at the United Nations or at an international business meeting in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. However, this trip section took place down the road in Jersey City, N.J. Fourteen cadets from the Department of Social Science's XH467 "Winning the Peace" class visited the multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multi-cultural community in Jersey City April 15-17, in an effort to better understand different cultures, religious groups and the dynamics of building cross-cultural relationships.

    The overall winner at the 44th Sandhurst Competition April 9-10 was ... Sandhurst. The team from the Britain's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, after which the annual competition is named, bested nearly 50 other military teams to claim the 2010 title at West Point. While the British claimed the top two finishes in the competition, the next three spots went to West Point. The two Sandhurst teams finished at 5:26:05 and 5:33:00, respectively. The Company C-1 team finished the highest (5:49:15) among the West Point teams, while 1st Regiment earned a trophy for best cadet regiment.
