About OEM

For more than 50 years, the New York State Office of Emergency Management and its predecessor agencies have been responsible for coordinating the activities of all State agencies to protect New York's communities, the State's economic well-being, and the environment from natural and man-made disasters and emergencies. NYS OEM routinely assists local governments, voluntary organizations, and private industry through a variety of emergency management programs including hazard identification, loss prevention, planning, training, operational response to emergencies, technical support, and disaster recovery assistance.

Announcements

  • - OEM is pleased to announce the availability of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds. These grants can be used to create new or update existing hazard mitigation plans and carry out mitigation projects, including removing or elevating structures within the floodplain.
  • - Federal Flood Insurance Changes - To help reduce the financial burden placed on property owners whose buildings are newly mapped into a high-risk flood area, the National Flood Insurance Program's Preferred Risk Policy (PRP) offers low-cost flood insurance to eligible owners and tenants.
  • - State All-Hazards Mitigation Plan - approved January 4, 2011, with no lapse in coverage. This means that eligible NYS applicants and State agencies remain eligible for the full range of available assistance with regard to debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairs to public infrastructure after a Presidential emergency or disaster declaration.
