U.S. Primary Energy Consumption by Source and Sector, 2011

  • Most of the energy consumed in the United States comes from fossil fuels — petroleum, coal, and natural gas, with crude oil-based petroleum products as the dominant source of energy.
  • Renewable energy resources currently supply about 9% of U.S. total energy consumption.
  • In the late 1950s, nuclear fuel began to be used to generate electricity, and now supplies about 20% of U.S. electricity.
