What is the purpose of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 (PSQIA), Public Law 109-41?
The purpose of the Act is to improve patient safety and to reduce the incidence of events that adversely affect patients. It encourages development of Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs)—new organizations that can work with clinicians and health care organizations to identify, analyze, and reduce the risks and hazards associated with patient care. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) administers the provisions dealing with PSOs.
