New York Hurricane Sandy (DR-4085)

Incident period: Saturday, October 27, 2012 to Thursday, November 8, 2012
Major Disaster Declaration declared on October 30, 2012
  • The new registration deadline for disaster assistance in New York is Wednesday, Feb. 27.
  • WE’RE HIRING for a variety of positions to work on recovery efforts.  Qualified candidates who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply.  Visit newyork.us.jobs and enter FEMA in the keyword search to see the full list of positions.
  • FEMA, at the request of the state of New York, has approved a two-week extension to the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program. FEMA will call applicants eligible for the extension to notify them of the extended two-week period and the checkout date of March 10, 2013.
  • Make sure FEMA has your current contact information if you have applied for disaster assistance.  After registering, FEMA will reach out to you to set up housing inspections and mail determination letters, so updating your phone number and mailing address as needed is key to ensure that your recovery is not delayed.
  • Don’t wait to settle with your insurance company before applying for a Small Business Administration disaster loan. Your insurance policy may not cover all replacement, repair and rebuilding costs; a disaster loan is available to cover the difference.
  • Visit our Rumor Control page for a list of identified rumors and help us combat misinformation.
