Healthy People 2020: the Next Generation of MCH-related Focus Areas

Overview

The Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) is pleased to announce an upcoming DataSpeak program titled “Healthy People 2020: the Next Generation of MCH-related Focus Areas”. Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. Although maternal and child health cuts across each of the 39 topic areas included in Healthy People 2020, there are several that are dedicated specifically to this population: Maternal, Infant, and Child Health; Early and Middle Childhood; and Adolescent Health. This program will provide a brief overview of Healthy People 2020, orient participants to important changes since Healthy People 2010, review the planning process followed by each of the three relevant workgroups, and discuss changes and important next steps resulting from the process.

Our first speaker will be Reem M. Ghandour, DrPH, MPA, who is a Public Health Analyst with MCHB’s Office of Epidemiology, Policy and Evaluation. Dr. Ghandour will open the program with an overview of Healthy People 2020 and several notable changes that have occurred since the last cycle. She will also discuss the planning process and changes in objectives and targets in the Maternal, Infant, and Child Health topic area. Our second speaker will be Beth Stevenson, MPH, who is a senior policy advisor in the Office of the Associate Director for Policy at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ms. Stevenson will discuss the Early and Middle Childhood topic area, which is new to this cycle of Healthy People. While she will touch on the objectives developed for the new topic area, she will focus on the process used by the workgroup and their plans for further developing this area. Our final speaker will be Trina Menden Anglin, MD, PhD, who is Director of Adolescent Health for MCHB. Dr. Anglin will describe the work of the Early and Middle Childhood workgroup, the need to address this population of children in the Healthy People 2020 framework, and the important next steps in this focus area.
