Farmers Markets --

Did you know that buying fresh fruits and vegetables from your local farmers can help decrease pollution and provide a better source of nutrients for you? Many VA’s across the country are teaming up with Veteran Canteen Services, MOVE Groups, and Health Promotions to provide veterans with a weekly, biweekly, or monthly farmer’s market at your local medical center or CBOC. Click to learn what facilities have markets near you! Healthy Teaching Kitchens Lead the Way to Healthy Cooking Skills

The Veterans Health Administration Nutrition Services are utilizing Healthy Teaching Kitchens (HTK) as a way to teach Veterans and their families how to select healthy food options and learn healthy cooking skills.  The concept began in 2010 when the VA received a grant which provided funding for 8 Healthy Teaching Kitchens.  The idea was inspired by the Culinary Institute of America’s (CIA) approach to providing nutrition education.
There are currently over 39 HTKs in the VA Healthcare System with many more planned throughout 2013.  Eventually all VA facilities will provide opportunities for Veterans to learn that eating healthy can be easy, inexpensive, and enjoyable.  To learn more about the HTKs please view the Healthy Teaching Kitchen PowerPoint or contact the Nutrition and Food Services Department at your VA.
