Veterans Recruitment and Retention Force

The Veterans Recruitment and Retention Force (VRF) was founded in November of 2011 with the goal of improving recruitment and retention of veterans to the NIH, in accordance with Executive Order 13518 of 2009: Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government External Web Site Policy.

VRF members hail from the all of the armed forces and work at most of NIH’s 27 institutes and centers. VRF is charged to help NIH uphold the federal commitment to veterans, working aggressively to target high-caliber veterans for employment.

VRF Activities

  • Welcome incoming veterans to the NIH at each new-employee orientation.
  • Develop NIH-wide marketing, recruitment, and retention strategies.
  • Create awareness of veteran initiatives across the NIH.
  • Host and attend hiring events targeting veterans.
  • Foster and expand relationships between veterans at NIH and with military communities and organizations outside of NIH through social and service events.

Current NIH Employees

  • Join the NIH Veterans Listserv. This listserv was created to foster greater sharing of ideas and information between veterans at NIH. Information about social and service events is distributed through the listserv.
  • Please fill out this VRF survey External Web Site Policy with your rank, awards, and other information about your military service. This will allow VRF to better plan events and programs for NIH veterans.
  • Become involved with the VRF by contacting Chris Pugh, a senior recruiter at NIH and lead on veterans recruitment.
  • Talk to your HR professional about changing your eOPF to indicate your veteran status. This will allow NIH OHR to have better records, such as knowing the number of veterans at each institute or center.
