About the JILPublished by the MLA as both an electronic database and as printable PDF editions, the JIL is the recognized professional source for announcements of full-time faculty positions available in the fields of English and foreign languages in North American colleges and universities. In 2010–11 the JIL carried more than 1,800 ads from over 1,100 departments and 725 institutions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and overseas.The JIL database allows job seekers to search by field or language, by geographic region, by key words or phrases in a job description (e.g., "women's studies," "Romanticism," or "drama"), and by rank. Faculty members, administrators, and current or former graduate students of departments that are members of the Association of Departments of English (ADE) and the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL) are allowed free access to the JIL through the ADE (www.ade.org) and ADFL (www.adfl.org) Web sites. Access requires a user name and password. MLA members in ADE- and ADFL-member departments can also log in to search the JIL at the MLA Web site with their MLA-member user name and password. Those who do not belong to an ADE- or ADFL-member department may access the database by becoming affiliate members of either the ADE or the ADFL. See Access to the JIL. Printable PDF files of the JIL are available at no charge at the MLA Web site (www.mla.org/jil_issues). Published five times a year (October, December, February, April, and Summer), the PDF versions make listings available for free to any user, provide departments with a documentary record of their job searches, and assist departments that hire foreign nationals in meeting the tear-sheet requirements of the US Immigration regulations. Listings primarily announce full-time academic job openings in postsecondary departments of English and foreign languages. The job openings range in rank from instructor to full professor and include faculty positions, administrative posts, vacancies abroad, and some opportunities for nonacademic employment. About two-thirds are openings at the rank of assistant professor. Federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, sex, age, disability, or national origin. The MLA Job Information List reserves the right to edit all statements to conform with such regulations. Statements from foreign language departments requiring that applicants be native speakers of a given language will not be accepted. Phrases such as “native command,” “native fluency,” and “native-level speaker” are acceptable. Library Subscriptions: The JIL database is available to libraries by subscription. A subscription runs on the academic year (September through August) and buys access to both the English and foreign language job listings. Access is provided through a campus IP address range (e.g., xxx.xx). Electronic subscriptions are also available to the ADE Bulletin and the ADFL Bulletin. FeaturesWeekly Updates: To make job listings available in a more timely manner for job seekers, especially in the period before the MLA convention, the JIL database will be updated weekly. Every Friday, all new listings submitted in the previous seven days will be added to the online database. Job seekers have the option to search the database for only those listings posted since a specified date. New listings remain online for six, eight, or twelve weeks. The hiring department may then choose to renew the listing for an additional period online; otherwise the job announcement is removed from the database.English and Foreign Language Editions: The JIL appears in two separate editions: an English edition, containing information from departments of English and American language and literature, and a foreign language edition, with listings from departments of foreign languages (Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, Middle Eastern and Asian languages, etc.). Identical information from comparative literature and linguistics departments, and in English as a second language, is included in both the English and foreign language editions, as are notices for nonacademic employment.
