World AIDS Day 2012

 The 2012 theme for World AIDS Day is "Working Together for an AIDS-Free Generation." Progress in HIV prevention, treatment, and research is bringing the United States closer to the promise of an AIDS-free generation:
- HIV prevention is saving lives. According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prevention efforts have averted more than 350,000 HIV infections in the United States (a conservative estimate for the period from 1991 to 2006).
- Antiretroviral therapy is protecting people by preventing HIV infection from advancing to AIDS. Currently, there are 31 Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved antiretroviral drugs available for people infected with HIV.
- Ongoing research is advancing the fight against HIV/AIDS. Research is underway to better understand HIV and how it causes disease, find new tools to prevent HIV infection, develop new and more effective treatments for people infected with HIV, and hopefully, find a cure.
