Gary H. Stern served as Chief Executive Officer and President of Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis since 1985 until his retirement in September 2009. Mr. Stern joined the Minneapolis Fed in January 1982 as senior vice president and director of research. Before joining the Minneapolis Fed, he was a partner in a New York-based economic consulting firm. His previous experience includes seven years at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where his last assignment was as manager of the Domestic Research Department. He also served on the faculties of Columbia University, Washington University and New York University. He has been Director at The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation since April 2010. He has been a Director of The Dolan Company since January 15, 2010. Mr. Stern serves as a Member of Board of Governors at Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc. He also serves as a Director at the National Council on Economic Education. He served as chairman of the board of the Northwest Area Foundation and the Minneapolis Club, and was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and of Hamline University. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Washington University. He also holds a doctorate of philosophy degree in economics from Rice University.

Along with Minneapolis Federal Reserve Senior Vice President, Ron Feldman, Stern co-authored "Too Big to Fail: The Hazards of Bank Bailouts" published by the Brookings Institution in 2004.
