Korean War Casualties
The Department of Defense reports that 54,246 American service men and women lost their lives during the Korean War. This includes all losses worldwide. Since the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. honors all U.S. military who lost their lives during the war, we have tried to obtain the names of service members who died during the period of June 27, 1950 to July 27, 1954. Accessible electronically at the memorial is an Honor Roll database where all 54,246 should be listed. Unfortunately, a fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Mo. destroyed many of the records of service personnel and a complete listing is not available. To date the database includes the names of nearly 39,000 service men and women who died during that period, including the 8,196 missing that are listed on our Honolulu Memorial. The Korean War Honor Roll database, including photographs, is available on this website.
As there has been no peace treaty, Americans who lost their lives in the demilitarized zone of Korea since the armistice have been included. The 8,196 Americans who were missing in action, or lost or buried at sea and commemorated at the Honolulu Memorial are included in the database at the Korean War Veterans Memorial.
An Honor Roll certificate for each of the American dead included in the database is available to the public. (See sample on the right.) You may obtain a certificate by filling out an electronic request form or by downloading the form. However, to read the form your computer must have Adobe Acrobat Reader. The reader is available free of charge.
