FROM OUR BLOG: Hawks vs. Doves: The Joint Chiefs and the Cuban Missile Crisis

October 18, 2012 -- Fifty years ago, the world stood on the brink of nuclear war when the U.S. verified that the Soviets were installing nuclear-capable medium and intermediate-range ballistic missiles on Cuba. In our blog, we review a surprisingly fascinating recent publication from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Policy, Vol. 8, 1961-1964, which discusses their behind-the-scenes participation in-- and private views of-- key international crises during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, including little-known stories about the internal battles to decide the U.S. response during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
