Podcast: Preventing Bed Sores

Debra: From the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, I’m Debra James with Healthcare 411. Information for better health.

Debra: The On-time Quality Prevention Program helped staff at a nursing home provide the best care possible for its residents at high risk of getting bed-sores. The On-time system lets nursing assistants record information about these residents electronically. Therefore, they could provide better, more timely care, which helped prevent bed sores. Dr. Susan Horn explains.

Dr. Horn: "On-Time" helped clinicians at the nursing home work together to identify residents who were at "high-risk" of getting bed sores. In fact, On-Time reduced the percentage of nursing home residents with bed sores and led to closer bedside monitoring of those most at risk. The same system is being put to use in other care settings today, resulting in better care, by helping medical staff make the best decisions when looking after their patients.

Debra: For more information visit healthit.ahrq.gov/transformingquality. Healthcare 411 is a production of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
