The National Library of Brazil houses many important manuscripts concerning the history of Brazil. The documents in this selection relate to Tiradentes, the hero of Brazil's struggle for independence, the opening of Brazil's ports to commerce in 1808, the abolition of slavery, and the founding of the National Library.

The Lady Maria Callcott Collection

Maria Graham, Lady Callcott (1785-1842), daughter of Admiral Dundas and the widow of Captain Thomas Graham, traveled in India, South Africa, and South America. This collection of thirty-nine watercolors that she painted depict the life and customs of the people of Brazil, with particular emphasis on slaves in the state of Bahia.

Esta coleção de trinta e nove aquarelas que ela pintou mostra a vida e costumes do povo brasileiro, com particular ênfase nos escravos no estado de Bahia.
