PubMed® and TOXNET® and Beyond are taught by the trainers at the National Library of Medicine Training Center throughout the United States and by the MEDLARS Management Section trainers at the National Library of Medicine. NLM Training: PubMed® for Librarians: Automatic Term Mapping (ATM)   Agenda >

CLASS FORMAT:

PubMed for Librarians is made up of five one-hour segments. These five segments will be presented via Adobe Connect and recorded for archival access.

Each segment is meant to be a stand-alone module designed for each user to determine how many and in what sequence they attend.

The segments are designed to take 1.5 hour each and, if the live session is attended, along with any pre-requisite work completed, will earn 1.5 MLA Continuing Education hours.

PUBMED FOR LIBRARIANS: AUTOMATIC TERM MAPPING (ATM) DESCRIPTION:

This is a synchronous online session that includes hands-on exercises. Attend this class to learn about Automatic Term Mapping (ATM), the process that maps keywords from your PubMed search to the controlled vocabulary of the MeSH database. Learn why searching with keywords in PubMed can be an effective approach to searching. We will also look at the explosion feature, what is and isn’t included in Search Details and lastly we will explore how PubMed processes/handles a phrase.

Prerequisite: A basic understanding of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).

This is a synchronous online session that includes hands-on exercises. The class will focus on using some of the tools and features built into PubMed that are designed to help you search more effectively. We will explore the new Filters Sidebar and topic-specific subsets. We will use History, tools in the NLM catalog and the Index to build searches and explore topics.

CLASS FORMAT:

PubMed for Librarians is made up of five one-hour segments. These five segments will be presented via Adobe Connect and recorded for archival access.

The segments are designed to take one hour each and, if the live session is attended, along with any pre-requisite work completed, will earn one MLA Continuing Education hour.

PUBMED FOR LIBRARIANS: CUSTOMIZATION - MY NCBI DESCRIPTION:

This is a synchronous online session that includes hands-on exercises. Attend this class to learn about the advantages of creating a My NCBI account, managing and manipulating your My NCBI page content using the features and options available in My NCBI, identify and differentiate available filters on PubMed’s filter sidebar, select and set up to 15 filters, and creating a custom filter.

Prerequisite: View 3 animated tutorials (total running time 8 minutes).

PUBMED FOR LIBRARIANS: INTRODUCTION TO PUBMED SEGMENT DESCRIPTION:

This is a synchronous online session that includes hands-on exercises. Attend this class to learn about the difference between PubMed and MEDLINE, how to run a PubMed search, assess your search retrieval, analyze search details, customize with My NCBI, discover and employ three ways to search for a known citation and use the Clinical Queries search tool.

Prerequisites: View the Boolean logic tutorial pages at: http://nnlm.gov/ntcc/animations.html. Create a My NCBI account if you don’t already have one.

PUBMED FOR LIBRARIANS: MeSH DESCRIPTION:

This is a synchronous online session that includes hands-on exercises. Attend this class to learn about the National Library of Medicine’s Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) database. We will talk about the 4 different types of MeSH terms and how searchers can benefit from using MesH to build a search. We will investigate the structure of the MeSH database and look at the components of a MeSH record.

Who should take PubMed for Trainers?

The class is intended specifically for those who train, or will train, others to use PubMed. This class could be for you if you teach PubMed to large groups, small groups, or one-on-one training. We look forward to lively discussions related to PubMed searching and instruction.

What should I expect from the PubMed® for Trainers class?

Enhance your knowledge of PubMed with the 15-hour PubMed for Trainers class. During the class, you can expect to:

  • Fill any gaps in general knowledge you might have about MEDLINE and PubMed.
  • Recognize what the National Library of Medicine considers good background information.
  • Improve your PubMed search technique.
  • Increase your ability to develop customized PubMed training.

What are the PubMed for Trainers class objectives?

For current and future PubMed trainers to discover and develop:

  1. Enhance your knowledge of the MEDLINE database
  2. Improve your ability to analyze and implement Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)
  3. Employ the features and functions of PubMed for use in searching and training
  4. Discuss instruction techniques with fellow trainers
  5. Experience peer collaboration and learning

How much time do I need to devote to the PubMed for Trainers class?

PubMed for Trainers is held in 4 sessions, 3 online sessions and 1 in person session. The class is eligible for 15 hours of MLA CE credit. This hands-on course consists of lectures, individual exercises, group work and discussions in four sessions, with approximately 2-3 hours of independent work to be done outside of class time. NLM or NTC trainers will deliver the lectures and facilitate discussions.

Using the National Library of Medicine's Environmental Health and Toxicology Portal

This course is designed to convey the basics of searching the NLM's TOXNET®, a Web-based system of databases in the areas of toxicology, environmental health, and related fields. The course will also teach students how to utilize NLM's environmental health and toxicology portal which provides resources beyond the TOXNET® databases. Students will learn the content and structure of files covering toxicology data, toxicology literature, toxic releases, and chemical nomenclature. Among the databases highlighted will be TOXLINE, the Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), and ChemIDplus. The course, taught by NLM instructors, will be conducted in a computer lab and includes lectures, online demonstrations, and hands-on exercises.

TOXNET® is a free class and is awarded 6.0 MLA continuing education credits.
