Freight Shipments Rose 1.0% in December from November
The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 1.0 percent in December from November, rising for the second consecutive month, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) released today.

November 2012 U.S. Surface Transportation Trade with Canada and Mexico Totaled $81.5 Billion
Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico, rose 6.2 percent in November 2012 compared to November 2011, totaling $81.5 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

November 2012 Passenger Airline Employment Down 2.0 Percent from November 2011
U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 381,639 workers in November 2012, 2.0 percent fewer than in November 2011, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. Scheduled passenger airline categories include network, low-cost, regional and other airlines.

3rd-Quarter 2012 Domestic Air Fares Rose 1.8% from 3rd Quarter 2011
Average domestic air fares rose to $367 in the third quarter of 2012, up 1.8 percent from the average fare of $361 in the third quarter of 2011, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today.  Huntsville, Ala., had the highest average fare, $522, while Atlantic City, N.J., had the lowest, $133.

October 2012 Airline System Passengers Decline 0.6% from October 2011
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today that U.S. airlines carried 60.8 million scheduled systemwide passengers in October 2012, 0.6 percent fewer than in October 2011. The systemwide decline was the result of a 0.8 percent decrease in the number of domestic passengers (53.7 million) despite a 1.0 percent increase in international passengers (7.2 million)

Freight Shipments Rose 1.7% in November from October
The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 1.7 percent in November from October, rising after a one-month decline, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) released today. The November 2012 index level (108.9) was 15.5 percent above the April 2009 low during the recession.

October 2012 U.S. Surface Transportation Trade with Canada and Mexico Totaled $85.3 Billion
Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico, rose 7.9 percent in October 2012 compared to October 2011, totaling $85.3 billion, unadjusted for inflation, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation.  Adjusted for inflation and exchange rates, the October 2012 total was $61.7 billion in 2004 dollars, up 7.6 percent from October 2011.

Survey Reveals Public Open to Ban on Hand-Held Cell Phone Use and Texting
A study performed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reveals that the public is open to a ban on hand-held cell phone use while driving. The study, based on data from 2009’s Omnibus Household Survey (OHS), showed that  96 percent of the respondents thought that text messaging using a cell phone, smart phone, or similar device should not be permitted while driving. Additionally, 80 percent thought that drivers should not be allowed to talk on a hand-held cell phone while driving.
