Down Beat: cover title graphic

From 1946 until his retirement from the jazz field in 1948, Gottlieb worked as an assistant editor and a writer-photographer for Down Beat magazine at the New York City branch office. He was responsible for writing concert reviews and columns, including a compilation of jazz news from around the world and a segment entitled "Posin'" in which he posed questions to prominent jazz personalities. Occasionally Gottlieb illustrated articles he did not write. The online Gottlieb Collection presents digital images of Down Beat articles in which Gottlieb's photographs were first published. During the late 1940s, Down Beat magazine was published in a newspaper-style format with a number of short articles and features; the "articles" range in length from a few pages to merely one photograph with a short caption. Articles without illustrations have been excluded from the collection.
