Rural/Frontier Women's Health Coordinating Centers: Bringing it all together to ensure better health care for women

The OWH is proud to announce that eight new second generation National Rural/Frontier Women's Health Coordinating Centers (RFCCs) will be funded on September 30, 2005. This will give us a grand total of 11 RFCCs throughout the U.S.

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson began an Initiative on Rural Communities in 2001 to improve and enhance health care and human services for the 65 million people who live in rural America. It is estimated that approximately one-fourth of the total U.S. population lives in rural areas.

When compared to urban Americans, rural and frontier residents have higher poverty rates, tend to be in poorer health, have fewer physicians, and fewer other health resources. Rural/frontier women are also more likely to suffer from heart disease, hypertension and cancer than urban women residents. The OWH has concluded that a comprehensive rural/frontier women's health coordinating center may be an effective strategy to address the health status of this population.

Each of the Centers will provide the following:

  • A comprehensive health care referral and tracking document;
  • A strategy for increasing the use of allied health professionals and other primary care providers using a gender-based approach to service delivery;
  • Strategies for developing innovative approaches in comprehensive, multidisciplinary health care to women;
  • Networking in the community to form alliances that link existing resources in the most efficient manner;
  • Efforts to foster the leadership and advocacy skills of women to help them more effectively navigate access to health care in the communities;
  • Efforts to maximize access to health care services using existing transportation resources;
  • Facilitate research in women's health in the communities;
  • Culturally and linguistically appropriate training and education in women's health for the public and health care professionals;
  • Community coalition development;
  • An evaluation of project outcomes and effectiveness.
