Described by many as the greatest mechanical invention ever conceived, the nation’s electric power grid — with its massive transmission towers, multiple substations and millions of miles of power lines — criss-cross through out the United States and Canada providing continuous power to our citizens. This system and the digital components that operate it are reliable and efficient, but often lack sufficient security measures to protect them from new and emerging cyber threats.

To ensure the secure, reliable and efficient distribution of power, the Department of Energy jointly established the National Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Test Bed program at Idaho National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory.

The program works to support industry and government efforts to enhance the cyber security of control systems used throughout the electricity, oil, and gas industries.

Working in partnership with the energy sector, the NSTB program seeks to

• Assess selected control systems and control system components to identify cyber vulnerabilities. Testing is planned and conducted in collaboration with the interested industry partner and may be performed in the laboratory (test bed) environment or at the partner's site.
• Provide Control System Security training through workshops that describe common cyber vulnerabilities found in control systems and effective methods for mitigation.
• Share with appropriate standard's organizations information that can be used to support the development of improved industry standards applicable to control system security.
• Participate in conferences that include control system security topics to share information obtained through system assessments and analyses.
