Finding Webcasts: Online Lectures, Readings, and Symposia


Many lectures, readings, and symposia held at the Library of Congress are made available later as video files through the Library of Congress Web site. These virtual events provide opportunities to see and hear discussions by Library of Congress staff and visiting speakers on topics that often intersect with the history and culture of American women.

Gathered here are links to pages on the Library of Congress Web site that offer video files of Library of Congress presentations, including a few examples of those containing material on American women. You will want to consult the Web pages mentioned below for comprehensive listings and details about software needed to view the files.

Among the types of offerings available on the Library of Congress Web site are:

Presentations highlighting items from Library of Congress collections - especially through the Journeys and Crossings program. For instance:

Presentations by authors and editors, including those sponsored by the Center for the Book and those presented at the National Book Festival. For instance:

  • Amy Shapiro discussing her biography of New Jersey Congresswoman Millicent Fenwick: "Her Way" (event date: April 1, 2003)
  • Documentary editors Esther Katz, editor-in-chief of the Margaret Sanger Papers Project at New York University, and Mary Lynn McCree Bryan, editor-in-chief of the Jane Addams Papers Project at Duke University, discuss "Women's Activism and Social Change: Documenting the Lives of Margaret Sanger and Jane Addams". The program also includes opening remarks by John Cole, director of the Center for the Book, and an introduction by Janice E. Ruth, American women's history specialist, Library of Congress Manuscript Division (event date: March 24, 2003)
  • Vice Admiral Patricia A. Tracey reading letters by women who have served in wartime from War Letters: Extraordinary Correspondence from American Wars (event date: May 1, 2002)
  • Photo researchers and editors Kathleen Thompson and Hilary Mac Austin's illustrated talk about their book Children of the Depression, which features more than 160 black-and-white photographs from the Library's Farm Security Administration (FSA) Collection (event date: February 12, 2002)

Symposia - for example:

Poetry and literature readings including those sponsored by the Poetry & Literature Center and the National Book Festival.

Discussions of issues currently affecting library and information services and developments expected to affect such services in the future, primarily offered through the Luminary Lectures series.

Recent cybercasts, as well as earlier lectures, events, conferences, and interviews, are highlighted on the Library of Congess Webcasts site.

  • search for the names of particular events or presenters
  • search for notices of events that have been or will be cybercast and for the audiovisual files themselves by entering the terms cybercast webcast
