Call Number: 877-917-4909
Passcode:      9569278
Antiviral medications with activity against influenza viruses are an important adjunct to influenza vaccine in the prevention and treatment of influenza. During this COCA call, a CDC subject matter expert will discuss the 2010 Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendations for the use of antiviral medications for the prevention and control of influenza.  The discussion will include information on treatment and chemoprophylaxis of influenza virus infection, and provide a summary of the effectiveness and safety of antiviral treatment medications.

Title: The Burden of Influenza in Chronic Illness
Date: Thursday, December 2, 2010
Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM (Eastern Time)
Call Number: 888-606-5919
Passcode: 9157512
Most people who get the flu will have mild illness, will not need medical care or antiviral drugs, and will recover in less than two weeks.  Some people, however, are more likely to get flu complications that result in being hospitalized and occasionally result in death. The flu can also make chronic health problems worse. People who have medical conditions like diabetes, kidney disease and cancer are more likely to get flu-related complications if they get sick from influenza. During this COCA call, subject matter experts will discuss the influenza vaccination recommendations from the 2010 Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and practice strategies for preventing and treating influenza in people with diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer.

Title: Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill: Public and Occupational Health Surveillance
Date: Tuesday, December 7, 2010
Topic: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Eastern Time)
Call Number: 888-790-6180
Passcode: 1281914

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) exploded 40 miles south of the Louisiana coast. The explosion resulted in 11 deaths and the largest marine petroleum release in history. During the next three months, over 4.9 billion barrels of oil escaped into the Gulf of Mexico.  The oil spill prompted the immediate monitoring of health among those potentially impacted by these exposures. Please join us for this informative COCA conference call where CDC subject matter experts will discuss the surveillance activities conducted for possible oil-spill related health effects among the response workers and populations residing in the spill-affected areas.

NIH Experts Describe Influenza Vaccines of the Future – NIH (Nov 17)
In a review article appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, examine research under way to address the limitations of currently available influenza vaccines and develop more efficient and reliable strategies to make vaccines to protect against seasonal as well as pandemic influenza. Although licensed seasonal flu vaccines safely and effectively protect most people who receive them from illness and death, the degree of protection varies depending on how well the circulating virus strains and those in the vaccine match. A vaccine recipient’s age and health status also can affect the effectiveness of influenza vaccination.

Emergency Preparedness & Response

NIH Scientists Show how Anthrax Bacteria Impair Immune Response: Studies in Mice Reveal How Bacteria Hamper Front-line Defense Cells – NIH (Nov 17)
Researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, have determined a key mechanism by which Bacillus anthracis bacteria initiate anthrax infection despite being greatly outnumbered by immune system scavenger cells. The finding, made by studying genetically modified mice, adds new detail to the picture of early-stage anthrax infection and supports efforts to develop vaccines and drugs that would block this part of the cycle.

Food & Drug Safety

FDA Urges Consumers to be 'Smart' about Antibiotic Use – FDA (Nov 15)
This year, millions of antibiotics will be prescribed. Antibiotics can be used to treat bacterial infections; however, they are commonly over-prescribed. Patients sometimes ask their health care professional to prescribe antibiotic drugs for viral infections, like the common cold, despite the fact that they will not work and may lead to potentially harmful side effects. The misuse of antibiotics has contributed to one of the world’s most pressing public health problems today, antibiotic resistance.
