ICE turns Mexican murder suspect captured in Sacramento over to Mexican authorities

SAN DIEGO - A Mexican national murder suspect captured earlier this month in Sacramento was turned over by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers Friday to representatives from the Mexican Attorney General's Office at the border crossing in San Ysidro, Calif.

Israel Toledo-Vieyra, 32, is accused of murdering Ascencion Cedejas-Miranda nearly a decade ago. An arrest warrant for Toledo was issued by a judge in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico, in September 2000.

Toledo came into ICE custody after being arrested by the police in Sacramento, Calif., on June 16, based on a tip provided by the U.S. Marshals Service Southwest Regional Fugitive Taskforce. He was immediately turned over to ICE for removal to Mexico.

"Israel Toledo had been hiding for over 10 years until the Sacramento Police Department's Career Criminal Apprehension Team (CCAT) partnered with ICE in locating him," said Deputy Chief Sam Somers. "We are pleased that after three months of work we were able to get someone wanted for a serious crime off our streets."

"ICE is grateful for the level of cooperation that resulted in the identification, capture and removal of someone wanted on serious criminal charges in his home country," said Michael Vaughn, the assistant field office director for ICE in Sacramento. "We will not allow foreign nationals to use the United States as a safe haven from their crimes."

Toledo was convicted in February 1999 on perjury charges in Sacramento County and sentenced to 45 days in jail. An immigration judge ordered Toledo removed to Mexico in March of 1999 and he was immediately deported.

ICE reinstated that removal order last week clearing the way for his return to Mexico Friday.
