Project Name: A Multi-Tiered Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the BBBSA Mentoring Model

Applicant: Miami University
Applicant Type: University
Application Number: 2012-50599-OH-JU
Funding Request: $486,459
Focus: Juveniles, Delinquency Prevention
Location: OH
Areas Covered: Nationwide

Summary: Miami University’s Center for School-Based Mental Health Programs proposes to conduct multi-tiered analyses of the effectiveness of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America mentoring model. Our comprehensive analysis will include current service delivery (business-as-usual) models and enhanced service delivery (replication/GTO) models for youth who are at-risk for delinquent behavior served by our four partnering BBBS agencies in the southwest region of Ohio. We will examine the influence of cumulative and developmental effects of risk factors in combination with the role of protective factors, replicate the original outcomes achieved in the landmark 1995 impact study, determine the mentoring relationship factors deem most effective in producing positive outcomes, and examine the impact of the BBBSA mentoring program on enhancing positive youth outcomes in social-emotional-behavioral functioning, academic achievement, and involvement in the juvenile justice system. Utilizing the results of our evaluation, we will develop a comprehensive set of guidelines for effective mentoring services and programming. In addition, we will develop recommendations regarding the use of a best practice process model to enhance mentoring models. Key indicators will include: 1) youth outcomes, 2) relationship outcomes, 3) values, beliefs, attitudes, 4) ability to accomplish goals, 5) satisfaction with mentoring matches, and 6) agency outcomes.
