Uganda

AGOA Status: Uganda is eligible for AGOA this year. It also qualifies for textile and apparel benefits.

Trade Agreements: The U.S. signed Trade and Investment Framework Agreements (TIFA) with the East African Community (EAC) in 2008, and with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in 2001. Uganda is a member of both regional organizations. USTR’s Africa Office is also leading U.S. efforts to forge a new trade and investment partnership with the East African Community.

Exports

Uganda was the United States' 156th largest goods export market in 2011.

U.S. goods exports to Uganda in 2011 were $94 million, up 0.5% from 2010.

The top export categories (2-digit HS) for 2011 were: Machinery ($26 million), Optic and Medical Instruments ($15 million), Electrical Machinery ($8 million), Cereals (wheat) ($8 million), and Aircraft ($7 million).

Imports

Uganda was the United States' 145th largest supplier of goods imports in 2011.

U.S. goods imports from Uganda totaled $46 million in 2011, a 20.4% decrease from 2010.

The top import categories (2-digit HS) for 2010 were: Spices, Coffee, and Tea (coffee) ($32 million), Cocoa ($5 million), Other Base Metals ($3 million), Special Other (returns) ($2 million), and Fish and Seafood ($1 million).

Trade Balance

The U.S. goods trade surplus with Uganda was $48 million in 2011, 34.2% more than in 2010.
