02/13/13 Office for Victims of Crime Announces $2.9 Million Grant to Support Victims in Aurora, Colo.
Today the Office of Justice Programs’ Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) announced a $2.9 million grant award to support services for the victims of the shootings in the Aurora, Colo. movie theater on July 20, 2012.

02/07/13 Media Advisory - National Institute of Justice Seeks Proposals for Research on Firearms and Violence
Today the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) announced a grant solicitation for gun violence research. The "Research on Firearms and Violence" solicitation calls for proposals for innovative and scientifically rigorous research related to this topic.

01/09/13 Justice Department Study Finds One in Four Women in Jails Have Serious Mental Illness, With Co-Occurring Posttraumatic Stress and Substance Use Disorders
The Office of Justice Programs› (OJP) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) today announced the findings of a recent study which found that a national sample of women in jails showed high rates of mental health problems, with a majority of the participants meeting diagnostic criteria for serious mental illness (SMI), lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and/or substance use disorder (SUD).

12/20/12 Serious Violent Crime Against Youth Dropped 77 Percent From 1994 to 2010
The overall rate of serious violent crime against youth ages 12 to 17 declined 77 percent from 1994 to 2010, falling from 61.9 victimizations per 1,000 youth to 14.0 victimizations per 1,000, according to a report released today by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Serious violent crimes include rape and other sexual assaults, robbery and aggravated assault.

Twenty-six state departments of corrections reported decreases in their prison population during 2011, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) reported today.

Last week the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) welcomed Google into the AMBER alert network. Last week, I was privileged to speak at the Clery Center for Security on Campus’s 25th anniversary gathering. Founded by Connie Clery – who was moved to action by the brutal rape and murder of her daughter, Jeanne – the Clery Center has made a tremendous impact on campus culture by raising awareness of sexual assaults on campus to help make schools safer and provide support and resources for victims.
