What is Hosting?

Hosting for schools, colleges and universities is allowing an international exchange student to attend your high school, community college or university for a semester or academic year. This opportunity broadens the minds of students and faculty while sharing U.S. culture and customs with international students.

How to Host

  • Review the State Department-sponsored programs with a hosting component.
  • Choose a program from which you would like to sponsor a student or educator.
  • Contact the grantee organization that administers the program.

High School Students

Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program
YES participants are high school students, ages 15-17, from countries with significant Muslim populations. They spend up to an academic year living with U.S. host families, learning about American society, acquiring leadership skills, and educating Americans about their countries and cultures.

American Serbia and Montenegro Youth Leadership Exchange (A-SMYLE)
A-SMYLE participants are high school students from Serbia and Montenegro who spend one academic year in the United States.

Congress–Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CYBX)
CBYX high school participants are German students with a 3.0 GPA, between the ages of 15-18 who spend an academic year in the United States.

Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX)
In the FLEX program, high school students from Eurasia, ages 15-17, who attend a U.S. high school for an academic year.

German American Partnership Program
The German American Partnership Program supports partnerships and exchanges between high schools in the U.S. and schools in Germany.

University Students

Community College Initiative Program
Participants spend one academic year in the United States and earn certificates in their fields of study. After completing the program, participants return home with new skills and expertise to help them contribute to the economic growth and development of their countries and societies.

Congress–Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CYBX)
The Young Professionals Component of CBYX is for students between 18–and-24-years-old, who wish to study for a semester and participate in internship programs.

Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD Program)
Participants are outstanding undergraduate students from underrepresented sectors in East Asia, Eurasia and Central Asia, the Near East and South Asia and the Western Hemisphere who visit the United States for non-degree full-time study combined with community service, internships and cultural enrichment.

Educator Programs

Fulbright European Union Scholar-in-Residence Program

The Fulbright European Union Scholar to strengthen U.S. expertise in European Union Affairs. The program brings approximately three scholars and professionals from EU countries to U.S. college and university campuses for semester-long grants to give guest lectures and seminars, consult with faculty and students on research, engage in collaborative study and provide outreach to neighboring institutions and the local community.

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program

A nine-month, non-degree program providing future teachers of English with the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of U.S. society and culture while strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities, and some high schools.

Fulbright Occasional Lecturer Fund

The OLF enables Fulbright Visiting Scholars who are currently in the U.S. to accept guest lecturing invitations at colleges and universities.  Scholars may apply for multiple OLF visits as long as those involve visits to minority serving colleges and universities through the OLF, as additional funds are available to scholars visiting such institutions.  Faculty and professional staff of U.S. colleges and universities can identify scholars to invite to their campuses.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence(SIR) Program

The SIR brings scholars and professionals from abroad to U.S. college and university campuses for a semester or an academic year, primarily to teach undergraduate courses. Priority is given to Minority Serving Institutions, community colleges, and small liberal arts colleges. SIR grantees also assist in developing curricula and serve as a resource for faculty, students, and the community. Approximately 50 grants are awarded annually worldwide.

Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq brings cohorts of Iraqi scholars in select fields to U.S. institutions for 10 weeks for faculty development, research, and other guided study activities. The program is designed to equip grantees with knowledge and tools to build the capacity of universities in Iraq and to advance the education of future generations of Iraqis.  U.S. institutions are encouraged to apply to host a discipline-based cohort of up to 10 Iraqi scholars.

Junior Faculty Development Program (JFDP)

Visiting fellows are university instructors at early stages of their careers. Participants study at U.S. colleges and universities, where they work together with American faculty members to broaden their knowledge in their fields of study.

Teachers Program

Through the teacher program, foreign teachers have the opportunities to teach in accredited primary and secondary schools in the United States for up to three years.
