Metastasis of a tumor from its primary site to other parts of the body continues to be the main reason why people die from cancer. In a new technical advance, NCI scientists have successfully designed, implemented, and validated a model that allows scientists to explore—in real-time—the progression of cancer as it metastasizes in the mouse lung. Understanding the mechanisms of how metastasis works is an important step in stopping its progression.

Cancer care cost the American public $104.1 billion in 2006 – the most recent year for which statistics are available – according to NCI’s newly released Cancer Trends Progress Report-2009/2010 Update. The financial burden of cancer looms even larger, however, when you consider other costs, such as losses in time and economic productivity.

State Medicaid programs have steadily increased coverage of tobacco dependence treatments since the mid-1990s, the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Trends Progress Report – 2009/2010 Update noted. Medicaid is a health insurance program run by federal and state governments for people who cannot afford regular medical care. In 1995, only three state Medicaid programs covered tobacco dependence treatments, but by 2006, 42 states and the District of Columbia covered some form of treatment. Two more states added coverage in 2007.
