Tajikistan

Sharing a porous border with Afghanistan and with a highly mobile population of over 7.7 million people, Tajikistan is a conduit for trade from Afghanistan and the rest of South Asia into Central Asia. It is also a potential path for religious extremism and crippling diseases, such as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS.

While stable, the country struggles with extreme poverty, low economic productivity, and high unemployment. These conditions, coupled with recurring food shortfalls and winter electrical power shortages, leave the country vulnerable to humanitarian crises.

To address these challenges, USAID partners with the people of Tajikistan to increase agricultural productivity and incomes, improve health and nutrition, strengthen basic education and enhance governance. USAID’s assistance focuses on increasing food security through the U.S. Government’s  Feed the Future initiative by improving agricultural production and profitability as well as assisting with the country’s structural reforms for improvement of the trade and investment climate. USAID also works to strengthen local governance, support the National Education and Health Strategy, and prevent and treat HIV and tuberculosis. Recognizing the country’s role as a linchpin for regional trade and security, USAID is promoting growth and stability to benefit Tajikistan, as well as the broader South and Central Asia region.
