WebMIRS User Guide - Installation

4.1 Hardware requirements

In order to run WebMIRS, your system must be a PC or Sun workstation.

PC's must run Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP and

  • have at least 64 MB of memory.
  • have at least 30 MB of free disk space.
  • be Pentium 200MHz or above.
  • have internet connection either through 28.8K or faster modem or high-speed connection(recommended).
  • may use Linux and other flavors of Unix (except Sun), but these have not been tested.
  • may likewise use Mac OS-X since it has a Java 1.3 JVM, but this hasn't been tested, either.

4.2 Software requirements

In order to run WebMIRS, your system must meet the following software requirements:

PC's must

  • be running in Windows 9x, Windows NT 4.0 or above, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or certain types of Linux (only Mandrake 8.2 has been tested.
  • have Java 1.3 or higher Java Runtime Environment installed.

Sun workstations must

  • be running the Solaris operating system using a version that has Java support, such as Solaris 2.6 or later.
  • have Java 1.3 or later JRE installed.

4.3 The Java Runtime Environment

Java 1.3 or later JRE is required to run WebMIRS. If you do not already have it installed, once you visit the WebMIRS webpage your browser will automatically go to the web site where it is available and download it. Internet Explorer will also install it for you, but Netscape does not. So you must find the file that was downloaded to your hard drive and invoke it to install it.
