Data Products

  • Public–use and restricted–use data products are created from existing censuses, surveys, and administrative data
  • CES researchers develop improved restricted–use microdata files designed for statistical research
  • The CES Data Warehouse maintains a historical repository of restricted–use Census Bureau data

Public-Use Data

The CES research program develops public–use data products by combining and enhancing existing data.

Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS): Measures of establishment business dynamics by state, firm, size, age, and industrial sector

Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI): Workforce statistics by demography, geography, and industry for each state

OnTheMap: Data on where workers live and work

SIPP Synthetic Beta (SSB): Synthetic Survey of Income and Program Participation

Synthetic Longitudinal Business Database (SynLBD): Beta version of synthetic microdata on all U.S. establishments

Restricted-Use Data

CES maintains and enhances microdata for research use in approved projects. All researcher access to restricted–use data occurs at the secure Census Research Data Centers (RDCs).

Examples of Economic Data for business establishments and firms

  • Economic Census
  • Longitudinal Business Database (LBD)
  • Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM)

Examples of Demographic Data for individuals and households

  • Decennial Census
  • American Community Survey (ACS)
  • Current Population Survey (CPS)

Examples of Longitudinal Employer–Household Dynamics (LEHD) Data

  • Employment History Files (EHF)
  • Employer Characteristics File (ECF)

Health Data from partnering agencies:

 What are Microdata?

Microdata are data at the level of the establishment, firm, individual, or household that are collected through census and survey programs.

What are Census  Research Data Centers?

Census Research Data Centers (RDCs) are U.S. Census Bureau facilities, staffed by a Census Bureau employee, which meet all physical and computer security requirements for access to restricted–use data. At RDCs, qualified researchers with approved projects receive restricted access to selected non–public Census Bureau data files.

 What is the
 VirtualRDC?

The Virtual RDC provides access to public use data products and a computing environment that mirrors the Census Bureau RDCs.
