Description

One of the preeminent artists of his generation, Mark Rothko (1903–1970) is associated with the abstract expressionist movement (sometimes referred to as the New York School). This circle of painters emerged during the 1940s as a new collective voice in American art. During a career that spanned five decades Rothko developed an innovative and impassioned form of abstract painting characterized by rigorous attention to formal elements such as color, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale.

The National Gallery of Art, Washington, is the largest public repository of Rothko's works, with a collection that includes nearly 300 paintings on canvas and paper and a study collection of more than 600 works on paper. This book of postcards presents thirty paintings and works of art on paper from that vast collection.
