Wai Wong heads the Unit on Neuron-Glia Interactions in Retinal Disease at the NEI, NIH that focuses on cellular mechanisms in the retina related to disease pathogenesis. He is also the principal investigator on a number of retinal clinical trials conducted at the NEI. He received bachelor degrees in biology and chemical engineering at MIT, and his M.D. and Ph.D in Neuroscience at Washington University. He continued his postdoctoral scientific and clinical training at University of Pennsylvania and the NIH.

Board-certified in Ophthalmology, and fellowship-trained in medical retina, Dr Wong also sees patients with retinal diseases at the NIH. His research focuses on translational approaches to understanding and targeting cellular mechanisms in diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy
