Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D)

Overview

The VA Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) pursues research that underscores all aspects of VA healthcare: patient care, care delivery, health outcomes, cost, and quality. HSR&D research also addresses critical issues for Veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan with conditions that may require care over their lifetimes.

The main HSR&D website can be found at http://www.hsrd.research.va.gov.

Mission

VA's Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) works to identify and evaluate innovative strategies that lead to accessible, high quality, cost-effective care for Veterans and the nation.

HSR&D is an intramural research program funding eligible VA clinician and non-clinician investigators to address VA healthcare priorities that ultimately help to improve healthcare for Veterans and the nation. VA HSR&D researchers carry out their mission and are supported by four key enterprises:

Centers of Excellence
HSR&D has 14 Centers of Excellence (CoE) that conduct research on an array of healthcare issues Each CoE develops its own research agenda, is affiliated with a VA medical center, and collaborates with local schools of public health and universities.
Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI)
HSR&D oversees and facilitates VA's Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI), which is designed to improve care by facilitating the adoption of new evidence based treatments, tests, and models of care into routine clinical practice. QUERI is a central component of VA's commitment to improving the quality of Veterans' healthcare.
HSRD Research Enhancement Award Programs (REAPs)
There are 13 VA HSR&D Research Enhancement Award Programs (REAPs) designed to support and build research program capacity at VA sites with a history of HSR&D merit-reviewed research and career development funding, but which are neither affiliated with nor the host of an HSR&D Center of Excellence.
Resource Centers
HSR&D maintains three Resource Centers, each with a special focus area, that provide support and information to VA researchers and healthcare managers.
