The ability to engage and share in multiple languages through social media is an emerging, but critical need for government agencies, as improving citizen services often means communicating with diverse local and international audiences.

During this webinar, experts from GSA and State Department will discuss how they approach multilingual social media strategies for government, and what other agencies can do to integrate them into their own program areas. Participants in the webinar are encouraged to share their ideas and best practices, or ask questions, via Twitter on the #SocialGov hashtag.

About the Presenters  

Mariya Bouraima is the French Social Media Community Manager at the Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs. Mariya manages social media with a focus on francophone audiences in Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, and Europe. She engages with overseas audiences via Twitter (@americagovfr) and Facebook (Génération Innovation) to support public diplomacy in action and encourage discussions about entrepreneurship, civil society, innovation, climate, and American culture. She has hosted various live events, including Q&As with international entrepreneurs as well as paraphrasing English-to-French speeches by the Secretary of State and the Under Secretary on Twitter.   

Mariya also works with embassies and consulates overseas to improve strategies for social media engagement.  

Laura Godfrey is the Manager of GobiernoUSA.gov, in the Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies at the General Services Administration. where she works with other agencies across government in researching, developing, evaluating, and maintaining online information to better serve the Hispanic community. Laura is actively involved in evaluating and adding new platforms and in 2008 launched GobiernoUSA.gov’s Twitter and Facebook presence, leading the way for government agencies to serve Spanish speakers through social media. She has partnered with other federal agencies to host Twitter town halls and live Facebook events to engage with this audience in a participatory dialogue.    

In 2010, GobiernoUSA.gov launched a mobile site and apps gallery to offer a new communication channel to the active and growing Spanish-speaking mobile community.
