The overall rate of severe occupational injuries/illnesses remained essentially unchanged in 2011 at 117 cases per 10,000 full-time workers; 20 percent occurred to just five occupations: laborers; nursing aides; janitors; truck drivers; and police officers.

The preliminary count of fatal work injuries in the U.S. in 2011 was 4,609, down slightly from the final total of 4,690 in 2010. Overall, fatal work injuries are down 21 percent since 2006.
