Access to Military Federal Agency Records
at the Archives Facility

Records Available

NARA's Mid Atlantic Region archives facility has original archival records for Federal military agencies in the states of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The archival collection includes paper documents, photographs, maps, and architectural drawings dating from 1789 to 1980s. Several Federal military offices are represented in the collection such as the Surgeon General (RG 112), the Quartermaster General (RG 92), Army Corps of Engineers (RG 77), Naval Operations (RG 38), and the Army Air Forces (RG 18).

The research potential of the Mid Atlantic Region's archival collection is endless. Military subjects covered include the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Norfolk Navy Yard, Army Corps of Engineers civil projects, Civil War, Army and Navy veterans homes, Army hospitals, ordnance depots, and Navy air stations. Federal law requires Federal agencies to transfer historic archival records to NARA.

Selected finding aids, including a comprehensive guide to archival records, are available by mail and the NARA web site.

For information about researching veterans service and pension records, see Access to Military Service and Pension Records.
