Nutrition Assistance Block Grants (NABG)

Description

The NABG Provides food assistance to low-income households in the U.S. Territories of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, in lieu of operating a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
With the authority granted them via the block grants, the U.S. territories establish eligibility and benefit levels for their nutrition assistance programs.

Participation

Low-income individuals and families are eligible for benefits as determined by each Territory

Budget

In FY 2012, Puerto Rico was provided over $2 billion for their program (including ARRA benefits of $165 million), American Samoa was provided $8 million (including ARRA benefits of $663,000), and Northern Mariana Islands $13.1 million.
