United States extradites fugitive to face international drug trafficking charges
ICE agents arrest and coordinate extradition of accused Colombian drug trafficker

NEW YORK - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Gabriel Jaime Herrera-Villada, a Colombian national, and coordinated his extradition to the United States to face charges for international drug trafficking. He was returned from Colombia to Islip, N.Y., yesterday aboard a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) aircraft and escorted by ICE agents.

Herrera was indicted on April 10, 2008, in the Eastern District of New York for his involvement as a transportation expert who coordinated shipments of cocaine from Colombia and Venezuela. Herrera is alleged to have arranged and participated in the transportation of multi-ton quantities of cocaine from Colombia and Venezuela to Mexico, Europe, West Africa and the United States.

This ICE-led investigation was coordinated between the ICE Office of Investigations in New York City and the ICE Attaché Bogota office. ICE agents in Bogota assisted in the investigation and coordinated the arrest and extradition with the cooperation of the Colombian National Police.

The prosecution of the case will be handled by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York.
