NEHEP Programs

The Hispanic/Latino community is composed of people from many different countries of origin, with distinct backgrounds, customs, and observances. As you develop your Hispanic/Latino outreach plan, keep in mind their cultural celebrations. The following are some observances and activities to consider as you plan your program. However, check with your community members for other dates represent the traditions of their countries.

• Día de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day), celebrated on January 6, 12 days after Christmas. In most of Latin America, this holiday is more important than Christmas because it is when children usually get their presents.

• Día de los Niños (Day of the Children), is celebrated on April 30 each year to recognize children as the center of the Hispanic/Latino family.

• Cinco de Mayo (May 5), or el Día de la Batalla de Puebla, is a celebration of the Mexican conquest of the French in Puebla.

• Día de la Madre (Mother’s Day), is a day, usually in May, to commemorate and celebrate mothers. The date varies by country.

• Día Nacional de Puerto Rico (National Puerto Rican Day), early June, celebrated with a parade in New York City, and with other festivals in different cities.

• Mes de la Herencia Hispana (Hispanic Heritage Month), is a national observance with a period of 31 days, beginning on September 15 and ending on October 15, that celebrates the Hispanic/Latino culture with various ceremonies and activities.

• Dia de la Independencia (Independence Day), commemorates the date a nation assumed independent statehood. In most Latin American countries, it is a national holiday. The date varies by country.
