Chancellor George Osborne ordered a three-year squeeze on welfare benefits today in his Autumn Statement as he missed his targets for borrowing and growth. Mr Osborne declared that he was “confronting the country’s problems” and there were no “miracle cures”, just hard work.

- Economy The economy will shrink by 0.1 per cent this year compared with a spring forecast of 0.8 per cent growth. It will grow by just 1.2 per cent in 2013. Britain will borrow at least £61 billion more over five years.
- Benefits Three-year welfare squeeze to save billions with real terms cuts in income support payments, housing benefit, jobseeker’s allowance, child benefit and tax credits. State pension goes up by 2.5 per cent next year.
- Fuel Duty Relief for motorists as the 3p per litre fuel duty rise due next month is axed and a further 3p increase set for April is delayed until September.
- Tax Tax cut for lower and middle income earners as the tax free personal allowance is raised by a further £235. But 400,000 more people will pay 40p higher rate of tax.
-Pensions A £1 billion raid on the pensions of the super-rich cuts the amount they can save tax-free in pension schemes from £50,000 to around £40,000. Capital gains and inheritance tax thresholds will rise by one per cent.
-Business Corporation tax cut to 21p by 2014, small business rate relief extended for a year and £1.5 billion more lending and guarantees for firms in £12 billion growth package.
