February 28 — 29, 2008 Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes

Welcome Remarks

Don Wright, Acting Assistant Secretary for Health, welcomed observers and thanked the committee and all the supporting organizations for their work. He noted that he is not a political appointee and subsequently hoped that he could help provide consistent leadership on this issue beyond the current administration. Dr. Wright noted the impressive work the committee has accomplished within a tight time frame and that the health benefits from this process will be far reaching. He noted the guidelines touches upon the President’s Healthier U.S. Initiative and the importance of the government coming together, speaking with one voice, to produce the first ever set of guidelines on physical activity. The challenge HHS will face in the future is delivering the message. HHS will rely heavily on fellow stakeholders such as the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to deliver the message. There is a great deal of excitement within HHS regarding this activity.
