June 28 — 29, 2007 Advisory Committee Meeting
Minutes

Metabolic Health

Dr. Haskell introduced Dr. Regensteiner and asked for an overview of issues surrounding metabolic health.

While on the surface metabolic health may appear to be easier to deal with it does present a challenge as several end points in the data will have to be reviewed (ex., diabetes, heart disease, obesity).

A compelling case can be made for intervening on diabetes with physical activity as the American Diabetes Association with data from the CDC estimate that about 21 million people have diabetes now with prevalence higher in people of minority background and underserved populations. Physical activity has well known metabolic and cardiovascular benefits for disease.

Behavioral change is a key issue when discussing diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity. The role of exercise with weight loss and energy balance also needs to be addressed. The barriers to behavior change are significant and time needs to be spent how to overcome those barriers.

Overall, key issues surrounding metabolic health include:

  • Barriers to exercise
  • Dose of exercise
  • Role of exercise with weight loss
  • Causes and treatments of exercise impairments in Type 2 Diabetes
  • Exercise and Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents
  • Exercise impairments in Type 1 Diabetes
