Brian Brooks Wins Translational Research Award

Brian P. Brooks, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Brian Brooks received the 2012 the ARVO Foundation/Pfizer Ophthalmics/Carl Camras Translational Research Award. This new award was made possible by a generous donation from Pfizer Ophthalmics in honor of the late Dr. Carl B. Camras, a highly respected glaucoma specialist and a research scientist. Dr. Brooks is chief of the NEI’s Unit on Pediatric, Developmental and Genetic Ophthalmology. He is one of the few clinician scientists in North America with board certification in both ophthalmology and medical genetics.

The Camras Award, which comes with a $10K prize, recognizes early career investigators who have made fundamental discoveries that could lead to novel new therapies or diagnostics. Dr. Brooks’ work focusses on the diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment of inherited eye disease, particularly those that affect children. He has a particular interest in the genetics of uveal coloboma and in new treatment strategies to improve vision in patients with albinism.

Brian was also honored at the White House by President Obama as a recipient of the 2010 Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE), the nation’s highest award for young investigators. He received the Young Investigator Award from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Michigan, Department of Ophthalmology.
