Shobi Veleri, Ph.D.

Shobi did his B.Sc. Zoology and M.Sc. Physiology from University of Calicut, Kerala, India. Following that he went to Delhi, accepting a fellowship from Defense nuclear medicine Institute to analyze how the cognitive functions are compromised in rodents after gamma irradiation. Then he moved on to University of Regensburg, Germany to do his doctoral thesis, analyzing light input pathways into the circadian clock of Drosophila. On completion of his Ph.D. in 2005, he has accepted a faculty position at DIPAS, Delhi, a defense R&D organization under Government of India. He was involved in studies analyzing the cognitive impairments at high altitude conditions, including field studies on Himalayas involving human subjects.

In 2006, he accepted a visiting fellowship from NIMH, NIH to identify the neurons required for general anesthesia in Drosophila.

He joined N-NRL in October 2008. His research is aimed at understanding the role of cilia genes in the rod outer segment development and maintenance.
