It turns out there is an evolutionary reason behind why we develop wrinkly fingers in hot water!

Science tests wrinkled fingers »
Experiments show wet objects are easier to handle with water-wrinkled fingers than with dry ones, hinting at a deeper evolutionary driver behind prune-like skin.

Check out +CERN 's Hangout tomorrow about protons colliding with lead ions. If you have questions you'd like to have asked in their Hangout, post them in the comment box under this post and we'll pass them along!
CERN originally shared this event:
Everyone is invited to this public event.
Hangout with CERN: Mouse smashes mammoth - protons collide with lead ions
Yesterday, January 24, 5:00 PM CET
Google+ Hangout: Watch live on http://youtube.com/CERNTV
Series 2 of "Hangout with CERN" kicks off on Thursday 24 January at 17:00 CET, broadcasting live on CERN's Google+ and YouTube pages.

In this Hangout we'll talk about why the LHC is currently smashing protons with lead ions, in a run that goes beyond the design specifications of the machine. With lead ions about 200 times bigger than protons this is really mouse verses mammoth!

What are the challenges? What do we hope to see? Experts from the LHC accelerator, theorists and members of the heavy-ion specialist +ALICE Experiment will answer your questions!

You can post questions in advance in the comments below or on Twitter to @CERN with the hashtag #askCERN. We'll pick the best ones to answer and we may even invite you to participate in the live hangout!

Want to watch our previous hangouts? They're all available via: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAk-9e5KQYEroNUYrWHAANKJL3LDz9-L_

Want to known more about the proton-ion run, check out the videos on the ALICE Experiment YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/aliceatlhc

While watching a nat-geo show, I heard that even with the power of the sun, we could not create more than a limited number of element, the first eight of the mandeleiv table, and all the others, like platinum, gold, are extraterrestrial ones. Could the lhc bypass this limit ?

How quickly can you freeze a bottle of water? Can you beat the time of a team at ESRF? They were able to do it in 15 seconds.
Recent experiments as the ESRF have provided an experimental explanation for the supercooled phase of water. This topic matters as it explains, for example, ...

On January 11, 2012, Google launched the second annual Google Science Fair!  The Google Science Fair is an international competition which encourages students between the ages of 13 to 18 to be curious, ask questions, and perform science experiments to answer those questions. In partnership with CERN, National Geographic, The LEGO Group and Scientific American, Google invites these students to post their science projects online so that they may compete for prizes, scholarships and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Interested students and teachers should visit www.google.com/sciencefair to learn more.
